Keys Easily Aces Quarterfinal Test

Madison Keys is into her third semifinal in the past five Grand Slam tournaments, including two in a row at the U.S. Open.
She’s still in search of major title No. 1.
The 14th-seeded American used her big-strike game built on serves and forehands to overpower No. 30 Carla Suarez Navarro 6-4, 6-3 in the quarterfinals at Flushing Meadows.
It all took less than 11/2 hours against Suarez Navarro, who eliminated five-time major champion Maria Sharapova in straight sets in her previous match but has never made it to the semifinals at a major.
Keys will play No. 20 Naomi Osaka on Thursday night for a chance to reach the final again. The other women’s semifinal is 23-time major champion Serena Williams against No. 19 Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia.
Osaka was an easy winner in her quarterfinal, eliminating unseeded Lesia Tsurenko of Ukraine 6-1, 6-1 in all of 57 minutes.
With Kei Nishikori defeating 2014 champ Marin Cilic 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-4, Osaka and Nishikori give Japan semifinalists in both men’s and women’s singles at the same Grand Slam tournament for the first time in tennis history.
Brian Wright scored his first MLS goal in the 71st minute and the New England Revolution beat New York City, 1-0, for FC’s first home loss of the season.
New England (8-10-9) snapped a nine-game winless streak to move within three points of sixth-place Montreal. NYC (14-8-6) has just one win in its last seven games.

Los Angeles Angels two-way star Shohei Ohtani has new damage in his pitching elbow and the team says Tommy John surgery has been recommended.
The Angels said Ohtani had an MRI in Texas that revealed the problem in his right ulnar collateral ligament.
In 10 starts on the mound, the right-hander was 4-2 with a 3.31 ERA.
He struck out 63 with 22 walks in 512/3 innings. The 24-year-old rookie was the Angels’ designated hitter for their series finale against the Rangers.
He walked his first time up, singled and scored in his next at-bat and hit a solo homer in the fifth inning.
Sergio Garcia, Ian Poulter, Henrik Stenson and Paul Casey were selected as Europe’s wild cards for the Ryder Cup, with captain Thomas Bjorn opting for experienced players to balance a team already containing five rookies.
